When should you see a pediatric endocrinologist?

Hormonal changes in children are often gradual, which makes them easy to miss. But some signs are worth a specialist's look, especially when they appear together, get worse over time, or don't fit your child's usual growth pattern. Below is a plain-language guide to what parents commonly notice, grouped the way our doctors think about them.

Growth

Growing slower or faster than expected

Height falling behind the growth curve for their age
No visible growth spurt when peers are clearly growing
Noticeably shorter than parents or siblings were at the same age
Slow growth in the first two years of life
Body proportions that look unusual for their age

Puberty

Puberty starting too early or too late

Breast development or pubic hair before age 8 in girls, or before age 9 in boys
No signs of puberty by age 13 in girls or 14 in boys
Early voice change or facial hair in young boys
No periods by age 15 in girls
Physical changes appearing unusually early or not at all

Diabetes signs

Unusual thirst, urination or energy dips

Slow growth paired with weight gain
Constant hunger or unusual food cravings

Thyroid

Low energy, mood or body-temperature changes

Persistent tiredness, sluggishness or trouble waking up
Cold intolerance or unusually dry skin and hair
Swelling at the front of the neck
Constipation that doesn't improve with diet changes
Mood swings, anxiety or a racing heartbeat
